Scarycake is a Melbourne-based band, whose core member is Venezuelan-born singer and drummer José Tortabu. With musical influences of 90’s grunge and 70’s prog rock, Scarycake’s Latin undertones make them truly unique and unpredictable.

Their track, “No taxes when we die” is their first public release since their collaboration formed amidst Melbourne lockdown in mid 2020. The lyrics, written by front-man José Tortabu, play on his irreverent, tongue-in-cheek humour, adding flavour to a social-political backdrop. Scarycake appreciate that music-making cannot be strictly categorised.

Conceptualised by elements of 70’s prog rock, (King Crimson, Frank Zappa) and 90’s rock arrangements (Alice in Chains, Soundgarden), Scarycake add their own Latin and Mediterranean flare, stemming from the cultures of Jose and guitarist Stefano Iole and bass player Felix Jeppe-Potier.

Their open-minded approach and a shared love for artists that create music that challenges and expands what is common in a classified genre, combined with a deep love for melody and pop sensibilities are the foundation of the band.
