Each Thursday in October, Little Faiths will present some of our favourite bands, especially curated for the Evelyn. Octo Thursdays will bring you the western swing of Shaky Stills, Annual Leaf’s smorgasbord of melodic riffs, the cult power pop of John Dowler’s Vanity Project and the mystifying alt/pop soundscapes of Burning Grace - and much much more.
Octo Week three, Thursday Oct 19th 8pm
John Dowler’s Vanity Project
Blackbirds FC
Little Faiths
Headlining are John Dowler’s Vanity Project … Australian cult power pop singer-songwriter John Dowler makes his Evelyn Hotel debut with his current outfit, John Dowler's Vanity Project. The Vanity Project and their past album, “12 Stitches” are a culmination of his previous work, one that touches on the art-pop rock of the first band Spare Change-the band that introduced Paul Kelly to Melbourne and gave Bob Kretschmer to Icehouse-and the pub folk-rock of his ‘80s band the Zimmermen-who gave SteveConnolly and Michael Barclay to Paul Kelly & The Messengers and released the classic indie pop single "Don't Go To Sydney". The Vanity Project have taken time out from pre-production work on the next albumt o record an EP of ‘covers’. The four songs represent a wide range of genres: AussieFreakbeat (Wars Or Hands Of Time), Garage Punk (Psychotic Reaction), Blue-eyed Soul (Could You Would You) and nascent Prog (Love Story). Songs by Master’s Apprentices, the Count Five, Them, Jethro Tull. It was produced, mixed and mastered by Craig Pilkington at Audrey Studios in Feb/March 2023. The band will be featuring this on the night.
In the middle are Blackbirds FC, featuring members of The Hollowmen, Helvelln, and the Vanda’s, BlackbirdsFC play their own brand of alt. country rock inspired by the Go-Betweens, The Church, XTC and Paul Kelly. Formed in 2017, the band released the EP Life Sciences in 2018 and their debut album Field Recordings in 2019. In late 2022, the band released its sophomore LP Magiclands with community radio airplay across the country, a sold-out launch and making it to #7 on the Australian Independent Records Labels Album Chart, their first top ten foray.
Opening the night are your hosts, Little Faiths, the song writing pairing of Douglas Galbraith and Jon Baxter, fellow music obsessives whose creative output spiralled when they put their heads together. Over the last two years they have compiled a sonic scrapbook crammed full of reveries, schemes, and shadowy recordings that are now slinking out into the light of day.
At the Evelyn, Little Faiths will be in full band mode.
