Immy Owusu 'LO-LIFE' Album Launch

Sat 19 Aug

Saturday, 19 Aug 2023
Supported by Cool Out Sun // Parvyn (Solo) // Kofi Berko (DJ)
Doors at 08:00pm

Described as “The Very Definition Of Culture Clash” by Don Letts (BBC6 Radio), Immy’s ‘Afrodelik’ music draws influences from Psychedlia, Zamrock and West African Highlife. He grew up in two worlds: the sea bleached lifestyle of the Australian Surf Coast with its rock n roll soundtrack, and the musical heritage of his Ghanaian family.

Immy’s father Kojo Noah Owusu is a master drummer from the Ashanti Kingdom of Ghana and his grandfather Koo Nimo is a legend of Ghanaian ‘Palm Wine’ Highlife, active since the 1960s. From them Immy learned Asante music and its instruments, added a fuzz pedal and began to experiment.

His music has received rave reviews and substantial airplay around the world including on BBC6, Worldwide FM, NTS, KEXP, NPR and Bandcamp Weekly and have been included in various mixes and playlists including by Dangermouse. Immy Owusu’s debut album LO-LIFE! draws on the work of West African giants such as Ebo Taylor and William Onyeabor as well as psychedelic troubadours like Rodriguez.

LO-LIFE! was live-tracked with an all-star band, featuring members of Surprise Chef, Karate Boogaloo and The Senegambian Jazz Band.

Cool Out Sun:
A collaboration of four drum-centric artists who love melody, Cool Out Sun is comprised of Sensible J (the producer and other half of Remi), Lamine Sonko (creator and lead of The African Intelligence), Nui Moon (Future Roots and Public Opinion Afro Orchestra) and N’fa Jones (House of Beige and 1200 Techniques). Cool Out Sun make Afro percussive, hip-hop-infused music designed for deep listening, emotive escape and dance floor fiasco, with inspirations ranging from traditional Afro folk & Taaso to Afro-Beat & Hip Hop and so called World music.

Parvyn:
Genre-drifting flow-state pop melds with classical Indian raga melodies, soul and jazz – all anchored by Parvyn’s ethereal, inimitable vocals. Nominated for ARIA 2022 'Best World Music Album of the Year', her debut solo record ‘Sa’ draws from a broad palette of styles and moods from garage-esque bounce to 808 bass, layered loops and virtuosic vocal improvisations.
Also known as singer in cult-psychedelic, vintage bollywood inspired band The Bombay Royale and touring globally since childhood with her father Dya Singh. With influences from Bjork to Anoushka Shankar, Parvyn’s music is immersed in a reflective world of different cultures and perspectives.

This event will take place on the lands of the Wurrundjeri People of the Kulin Nation. We pay respects to the elders past present and emerging. Sovereignty was never ceded.
