FRIDAY 7 FEBRUARY
MEDIUM FIRE RELIEF
Ft. Prettything, GUS, Tuckshop, Ciao Bella (DJ SET), Gram b2b Alpha Blondie (DJ)
This event takes place on stolen lands belonging to the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation. We pay respects to their Elders both past and present. Sovereignty never ceded. Additionally, when discussing the effects of climate change we must not forget that Indigenous peoples are among the first to face the direct consequences of climate change due to their dependence upon, and close relationship, with the environment and its resources (UN, 2019). Part of confronting climate change involves engaging with and listening to Indigenous peoples in climate change policy.
You already know what’s going on. Australia is in the middle of both an environmental and humanitarian crisis that is predicted to go on for months. And as we’ve grown accustomed to, our government is doing the least. Millions upon millions of acres have been burned, communities remain cut off from medical help and lives have been lost.
While it would have been easy to disassociate from the very real atrocities that are happening across our country, especially in the safety of central Melbourne, we are blown away by the strength and compassion our city has shown. We stand in solidarity with those in affected communities, who have been forced to leave their homes and with those frightened at the state of our planet.
